The world has evolved into a place marked by our insatiable hunger for objects and wealth, an isolating materialism that has bred an acute form of human amnesia. Our hunger for abundance (money, objects, land) has enabled us to forget that, in truth, survival is simply dependent upon fundamental things and not an exaggeration of wealth or materiality. This amnesia has nurtured the seeds that feed our unquenchable thirst for things: wealth for wealth's sake. Sadly, the desire for living simply, to be at peace with nature, has for many become a distant memory, even idealistic or odd. Korean artist Sang-Taek Oh explores this paradox (where simplicity and community with nature run counter to modern, chaotic life) in a series of often-surreal photographs entitled "PROCESS".

Symbolic Ambiguities
Linda Briskin and Kye Marshall
Opening reception - Thursday, May 15, 2007 - 7-10 pm
INDEXG

Linda Briskin highlights the ambiguity in what we choose to see, and challenges the eye to embrace multiplicity. These multi-layered reflections unsettle what memory and history inspire us to expect, point to alternative realities, and underscore the intricacy and complexity of the everyday. The symbol of Janus, which informs this show, encourages the mind to embrace, at one and the same time, conflicting, often contradictory layers of interpretation, vision, and reality.

Kye Marshall photographs through a musical lens of colour, rhythm, line and form. In her images, she explores the relationship between the visible, the spiritual and the symbolic. She abstracts images derived from nature and elsewhere to create metaphors for the unconscious. For Marshall, photography expands both inner and outer worlds, drawing on memory and history to re-invent ways of seeing and being in the world.
